Step 2: Initial Consultation
When you reach our vein clinic for your appointment, you’ll be asked to fill a form with all of your symptoms and medical history. After filling out the form, your initial consultation with our vein doctors will begin. During the initial consultation, we aim to understand your goals and symptoms and determine if you might have chronic venous insufficiency, the root cause of most vein problems. As such, you can expect a thorough consultation where the vein doctors will carefully listen to your symptoms and concerns instead of rushing you.
Chronic venous insufficiency is a circulatory disorder wherein your vein valves collapse. In healthy veins, the valves act as one-way doors to facilitate smooth blood circulation towards the heart. When your vein valves collapse, blood flows backward and accumulates in the leg veins, eventually leading to spider veins and varicose veins. Diagnosing vein disease is an essential component of vein treatments because treating the superficial symptoms without addressing the root cause would inevitably cause a relapse. As such, we always start our vein treatments with a thorough initial consultation.
During your initial consultation, the vein doctor will examine your leg veins, spider veins, varicose veins, and skin quality. They will ask you to highlight the signs and symptoms of vein disease, such as leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, frequent leg cramps, and leg pain. If these signs and symptoms worsen at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting or standing still, there’s a strong chance you have chronic venous insufficiency.
Step 3: Vascular Imaging
The vein doctor will administer an ultrasound diagnostic test, known as duplex ultrasound, to confirm the presence of vein disease. During the test, the vein doctor will move a handheld ultrasound device over your legs to release ultrasound energy and visualize the direction of blood flow in your leg veins. If you have chronic venous insufficiency, your blood may flow backward, and there will be signs of blood accumulation in the leg veins.
Step 4: Treatment Planning
After diagnosing vein disease, the vein doctor will curate a personalized vein treatment plan just for you. The vein doctor will recommend the ideal vein treatments according to your symptoms, diagnosis, medical history, risk of allergies, and insurance coverage options. Furthermore, the vein doctor will also walk you through all the potential treatments, including their risks and costs, so you can make an informed decision. We follow a collaborative approach to vein treatment planning.
Step 5: Primary Vein Treatment
If you have chronic venous insufficiency, your primary vein treatment will start with one of the following procedures: radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or venaseal. These minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments have the same goal — destroying the diseased vein to reroute the accumulated blood into healthier leg veins. However, they accomplish this goal using different methods and techniques.
The following is an overview of your minimally invasive vein treatments:
- Radiofrequency Ablation: The vein doctor channels thermal energy into the diseased vein via a catheter to make it collapse and get metabolized by the body.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation: The vein doctor channels laser energy into the diseased vein via a laser fiber to make it collapse and get metabolized by the body.
- VenaSeal: The vein specialist injects an FDA-approved medical-grade adhesive into the diseased saphenous vein to fuse its walls shut, rerouting the accumulated blood into healthier leg veins.
Step 6: Cosmetic Vein Treatment
If you don’t have vein disease or after the primary vein treatment, the vein doctor may recommend ambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy. These are cosmetic procedures that remove superficial varicose veins and spider veins, thereby improving your leg’s appearance. However, these procedures don’t address the root cause of your vein problems, so they should only be performed after the primary vein treatment.
The following is an overview of your cosmetic vein treatments:
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy: The vein doctor makes small incisions on the skin’s surface to extract the superficial varicose veins.
- Sclerotherapy: The vein physician injects a sclerosant medicine into the spider veins to turn them into hardened scar tissues eventually absorbed by the body.
Step 7: Recovery & Aftercare
After the vein treatment, the vein doctor will discuss your recovery and aftercare guidelines. You’ll have to wear compression stockings for a few weeks and avoid heavy lifting, but you can resume most of your daily activities and work immediately. Minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments are safe and effective.
